The January 6th Committee has scaled back their requests for hundreds of pages of documents from the Trump administration after the Biden administration intervened. This intervention was necessary, and the Biden administration says that the documents in question could create national security problems if they are released. But there's a more important reason for the documents to be withheld, as Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains.

This week, the Capitol riot committee decided to scale back their request for hundreds of documents from Donald Trump after the Biden White House actually intervened and said, you don't really need these documents. And of course, you know, there's a national security threat if we were to give you these documents. So would you mind maybe scaling back your request. Now, the whole national security thing, whatever, right? That bothers me because they use that as a catchall. And I am curious to know what kind of national security issues could emerge from documents related to January 6th. Ah, but see, therein lies the problem. These likely were not documents related to January 6th at all, which is why believe it or not, I actually support the Biden administrations decision to step in and tell the committee, you don't need these documents. And here's the reasoning for that.

We already have Republicans who are out there every day telling us that this committee is pure partisan politics. They're on a witch hunt trying to take down Trump. Now trying to take down Republican members of Congress. So if they're requesting documents that they do not need or that are not directly related to an attempt by the Trump administration to overturn the election or possible collusion with the Stop the Steal rally organizers, they're irrelevant. And no, the committee should not get their hands on them. They shouldn't even request them because that is when, at least in the court of public opinion, you're going to hand the Republicans a huge victory with them being able to say, look at it. They're taking all these documents they don't even need because they're on a fishing expedition. And that is something that this committee desperately has to do a better job of avoiding. Now I'm not saying these documents are not relevant to what it is they're trying to find. What I am saying is that it does give the Republicans fodder to say that it is.

Remember folks, perception is the key here. We know that Democrats are horrible when it comes to messaging. You know, they let Republicans get ahead of every possible issue imaginable and they're already ahead on this one too. So requesting documents that may not appear to the public to serve a purpose to the committee means that the public thinks they don't serve a purpose and that the Republican talking points would in fact, be correct, that this is a fishing expedition designed to take down Republicans. This has less to do with the actual investigation and more to do with the public's perception of the work being done by the committee and that of course is why I do support this decision from the Biden administration to tell the committee to kind of back off a little bit on some of these, I don't care if they're using the national security excuse. If it doesn't matter to the committee, if it's not truly something that they need, then no, they should not get their hands on it because all you do at that point is give more ammo to the people who already hate this committee.
