With new polls showing that close to 80% of Republicans want Trump to run again in 2024, Mitch McConnell spoke out and said that Republicans need to focus on the future, not the past. McConnell is not thrilled about the prospect of having to deal with Trump for another 4 years, especially after he threatened to have Republicans stay home in 2022 and beyond if the Party didn't bow to his demands. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains what's happening.

Donald Trump's popularity among Republican voters is surging once again and Mitch McConnell could not be angrier about this. When he was asked recently this week about Donald Trump's growing popularity, about the potential of a rehash of the 2020 election in the 2022 election, McConnell had this to say. Well, I do think we need to be talking about the future, not the past. I think the American people are focusing on this administration, what it's doing to the country and it's my hope that the 2022 election will be a referendum on the performance of the current administration. Not a rehash of suggestions about what may have happened in 2020. Now that seems like a pretty innocent enough statement, right? But this is Mitch McConnell we're talking about here. Okay. This isn't a guy who reacts to things like Matt Gaetz or Marjorie Taylor Greene, or even Trump himself. When he gets mad, you don't necessarily know that he's angry. He's not going to go out there and lash out and say all these horribly angry things. This statement is about as extreme as Mitch McConnell gets.
But for Mitch McConnell, this is a rather extreme statement saying, we're going to look to the future. We're not going to worry about the past and of course, Donald Trump is in fact the past. But what has Mitch McConnell so worried right now is the fact that Donald Trump now has support from 78% of Republicans who think he should run for president again in 2024. But Mitch McConnell's not so much worried about that number. Well, he's worried about it to the extent that that could convince Donald Trump to run again. Mitch McConnell is smarter than that. He's evil, but he's smart and Mitch McConnell understands the other half of that poll that shows that 58% of independents do not want to see Donald Trump run again. See, Mitch McConnell's looking at the bigger picture here. He understands that outside of the Republican bubble, Donald Trump is still incredibly unpopular. Even with everything that's happening with this administration right now, Trump is still less popular. He's still toxic for the party. He is pushing extreme candidates all over the country.
And Mitch McConnell doesn't want to see those extremists push out the normal Republicans because that could lead to a Democratic victory in that particular county or state in the midterms. And his Republican stalemate in the Senate hangs by a thread right now, folks. Republicans have more candidates up for reelection in the Senate than the Democrats do, which means the Republicans have to spend more money. They have to do more campaigns. They have to recruit new people to replace the ones who were retiring, which means even more money on those races. They have to defend more than the Democrats and that's trouble if Donald Trump sticks his nose in there thinking he's the king of the Republican party. So that's what's freaking Mitch McConnell out right now. It may not look like it on the surface, but McConnell is a little panicked. He is definitely angry and he doesn't want to see Donald Trump as the head of the Republican party ever again.
